How can I withdraw Paypal Money Into Kenya Using Epesa

As a business minded gal (I don’t think I view myself as an entrepreneur) I like to give credit where it is due, especially when someone is responding to a need and making money out of it. That is the true concept of business. There is a common thread on many Kenyan forums; 'how can I withdraw Paypal money into Kenya'. I have written as extensive article about that here. The simple answer to that on that post is – you can receive money in Kenya using Paypal, but it is a pain in the you-know-what to get it out. I still maintain that position, but on this post I can confidently say I now know of another way, though I think it is an expensive one, to bring Paypal money into Kenya and it will work for you in an emergency - Epesa.

I was recently having this discussion 'how can I withdraw Paypal money into Kenya' with a friend whose internet knowledge I trust, and they said, have you tested Epesa. I said, they are a shylock; charging me 30% as far as I am concerned only exists with shylocks. Yeah! Sometimes I can be stereotypical like that. He said no, it is not that high it's about half. Then I said, have you used them, because every time I try to log onto their site, I am told it is an insecure site. And then he said, would I seriously recommend a scam to you? And with that powerful sales pitch, I decided to give Epesa a try and see what happens. Here is a narration of my experience with Epesa.

For those of you who do not like details, let me crunch the numbers for you. To withdraw 110$ which roughly translates to 8,415 KES using the Epesa shilling amount at 76.5 KES to the dollar, I finally received by Safaricom MPESA 6,923 KES. Since I am a Kenyan, and I like to think like a Kenyan, it basically meant I spent 1,492 KES to bring in less than 9,000KES, which is about 17.7% and to me that is an expensive route because it is for every transaction. The good news here is, if you have an emergency situation like you need to send your mother seed (why is 'money to buy seed' always an emergency?) you will get your money in about 72 hours through the Epesa platform

For those of you who think this is enough said; click on the link: Epesa

For those of you that like the details, here is the process:

First, note that their site is not a .com it is a .net. Why in the world they have not bought the .com site, and I will recommend that to them since the site is on sale, I have no idea. Anyway, I started by calling Epesa to ascertain that they were real human beings (just kidding, the site ambience is not scam-ish), it was really because there is no mention of Paypal anywhere on the Epesa site. Turns out, you need to register an account to get the instructions for Paypal, because thanks to online Credit Card fraud (I call it corruption a la zungs), dealing with Paypal is like maneuvering through a 'mtego wa panya' (there is no English equivalent to that one, well there is, a maze, but it does not get the meaning right) and you need to pass security check galore like going to the Kenyan Israeli Embassy.

Anyway, once you open an Epesa account, send Epesa an email requesting to get the instructions on how to withdraw Paypal money into Kenya, and follow those instructions. Here is something important; if you wish to bring in more than 50$ please verify your account at this time, it will save you time later. After you have followed the instructions given, you can sit and hyperventilate, and bite your fingers hoping you have not just given your money to a fraud. Note, they do not ask you for any personal details anywhere except your email. Anyway, after about 24 hours (or less) you will get an email saying 'your transaction has changed to completed'. This is the good news email that basically says your Paypal is genuine, it had money, and the money is now in Kenyan cyberspace. Nice language there.

I got this email at night (after ten) and by Epesa instructions, I decided it is best to wait for the day to break as they make payments only between 8.00 am and 9.00pm. I got stuck here (because you deal with two different sites) and called them again, but here is what you need to do. Log onto your Epesa account, and please note it is your Epesa account, and click on 'withdraw'. Now here is where the magic starts. You fill in your details; name and phone number and for me, as I was still wondering how long this last stretch will take, I got a message from Safaricom MPESA…and viola! I was six thousand bob richer. How cool is that?

And then I wrote this blog.

Is there a cheaper way to withdraw Paypal money into Kenya?
Yes! I will still continue to recommend the Payoneer Debit Card from Triple Clicks which is the product arm of SFI internet business because it serves two purposes;

Second; you can use the card to withdraw Paypal money into Kenya, and all those other online payments stress free.
